Last term, Foundation students worked on narrating picture storybooks that linked with their Inquiry unit ‘From Farm to Plate’. Through the narration students’ added actions, sounds through voice, body percussion and musical instruments to communicate their ideas. There were some fantastic roosters in the group!
Term 4 Foundation students are playing ‘Boomwhackers’, a set of tuned percussion instruments that look similar to rainbow-coloured plastic tubes. They are learning to link the tubes to their musical notes and solfege (singing notes – “Do-Re-Mi”). We are looking forward to learning a song to perform at the Foundation Concert – fingers crossed that it all comes together! Grade 5 and 6 students this term are working on creating their own Performing Arts game in a pair or by themselves. They have an assessment rubric to use in the development of the game to ensure they create an enjoyable, educational and functional game for others to play.

Choir re-started this term in a burst of excitement! Due to the level of interest from the students and timetabling constraints, we will have a Junior Choir for Grades 2 and a Senior Choir for Grades 3-6.
I hope that starting next week we will have regular rehearsals, Monday session 4 for the Junior Choir and Monday session 6 for the Senior Choir. Please stay tuned for information about performances at school and possibly in our local community. The annual Victorian State Schools Spectacular provides an invaluable performing arts opportunity for Victoria’s government school students from Prep to Year 12, encouraging development of their creative skills, discipline, perseverance and confidence over months of rehearsals.
As one of the largest recurring productions in Australia, the Victorian State Schools Spectacular brings together over 3000 school students performing as a 64 piece orchestra, 1300 voice choir, 1200 mass dancers, 30 lead vocalists, 16 principal dancers, 20 ensemble dancers, 8 backing vocalists, roller skaters and puppeteers and much more. The Spectacular also provides a unique training opportunity for students behind the scenes on audio, lighting and video production, stage management, costume and film, make up, photography, and publicity. The Spectacular displays and unites government school communities through working towards a common goal of more students reaching the highest level of achievement in the arts, ensuring kids are happy, healthy and resilient, and building pride in our schools. Registrations open on Monday 16 October 2017 for government schools and students to participate in the 2018 Victorian State Schools Spectacular, which will be staged at Hisense Arena on Saturday 15 September 2018. This week in Performing Arts, Grade 1 and 2 students have been playing rhythm games on the glockenspiels, recorders or by using body percussion. It has been fun way to finish off their semester.
If your child has a recorder and bag at home, please ensure they are returned to school at the start of next term. During Grade 3 lessons this week, the Performing Arts Room was messy! Working messy though, as we were busy creating our musical instruments. There were some fabulous creations and with materials better than cardboard and string, I feel like we perhaps should have been applying for patents! Grade 4 students finished with their performances, based on the music genre they researched – dances, musical arrangements and singing. Fantastic work! I wish the Grade 1-4 students all the best for the remainder of the school year and I’m sure they will enjoy what Mrs. Dulics has to offer in Chinese Mandarin. Well, things are almost coming to a wrap in Performing Arts for Term 2. What a busy time it is!
Grade 1 and 2 students have completed some final assessments, of the glockenspiel and recorder that reviewed the notes they have learnt and rhythm names. Grade 3 students are completing their instrument designs and commencing construction during the last two weeks of term. Please remember to bring your recycled instrument items you need on Monday 19th June. Grade 4 students have been finalizing their bands, songs and dances. We are looking forward to sharing the final products with our peers in the last two weeks. The Grade 4 students have been wonderful representing TPPS at our local kindergartens and preschools. Thank-you to these students for their excitement and commitment at the following visits:
· Templestowe Preschool – Brodie, Shylah, Annie, Aaron, Kristofer and William. · Deep Creek Preschool – Levent, Christina, Josiah, Jake, Zara and Katie. · Yarra Valley Preschool – Moses, Estelle, Georgia, Jed, Christian and James. Grade 1 and 2 students are enjoying learning the glockenspiel and recorder. It is fantastic to hear how many are practicing at home and have requested to take their music books home to facilitate their learning. Grade 3 and 4 students have nearly completed their instrument or music genre research and now are planning what they would like to learn next. I have a strong feeling that bands will be formed and songs created in the next few weeks! Grade 4 students have commenced their visits to our local kindergartens and preschools. They have been wonderful representatives for our school and are doing a fantastic job as ‘Mini Teachers’. Thank-you to Rosa, Ben, Emily, Chloe, Harry and Ellyse from 4U who attended Imagine Childcare and Kindergarten Templestowe. Thanks also to the following students who visited Lower Templestowe Preschool: Shaya, Indi, Taryn, Alicia, Chloe from 4M and Stephen and Eran from 4U.
Grade 4 students have almost completed their Puppet Shows; it has been a crazy experience since we started creating puppets and sceneries but an enjoyable one. Grade 3 and 4 students are now working on a dance and music unit. More details will unfold as we further investigate the students’ interests and then the direction of where we will be taking our inquiry. Grade 2 students are commencing the recorder – they will learn how to play and read music following the Recorder Karate program. Along with answering some of their diverse wonderings they came up with when asked, ‘What would you like to know or learn about the recorder?’ The following are some of the students’ questions: · How long will it take to be an expert? An expert is when you know how to play a footy team song. · How is it made and by who? · Can you use something other than your breath to play it? · Where is it from? · How does it attract snakes? Grade 1 are commencing the glockenspiel – learning how to play and read music. We received delivery on Wednesday of our new instruments for the students to utilise, which was perfect timing for 1/2E. Senior and Junior Choirs had their first performance for 2017 at assembly on Wednesday 22nd March. We had a quick rehearsal at lunchtime to hopefully chase away any nerves or anxiety. All students did an amazing job with theJunior Choir singing: "Get Back up Again" from Trolls and "How Far I'll go" from Moana and the Senior Choir singing: "Firework' by Katy Perry.
I hope all the Choir students have had a lot of fun this term! I shall look forward to working with the choir again at the start of Term 4. Wow! Term 1 is almost over – time flies when you are having fun! What a busy, busy 9 weeks it has been with so much achieved already in this school year!
Grade 4 students are continuing to finesse their puppets and shows. There has been some amazing creativity shown and fabulously entertaining stories been told. I look forward to taking some of the Grade 4 students and their shows on tour next term when we visit our local kindergartens and preschools. During the start of Term 2, Mr. Roberts and myself will be taking 4-6 Grade 4 students to our local kindergartens and preschools, where students will perform their puppet show and then do some dance, drama and music activities with the kinder students. Grade 3 students are putting their final touches on their acts, in preparation for their final performance next week in class. It is sure to be an entertaining week. Grade 1-2 students have finalised their own dances to “The Macarena” or “The Mexican Hat Dance”. They will now be sharing their dances and teaching the steps to other peers in class. |
