At the end of Term 1, the world saw an unprecedented change, as we all moved into isolation. At TPPS, we moved our learning online, and students participated in the Home Learning Program for the majority of Term 2. In Performing Arts, students showed creativity using props and costumes from around the house to create performance spaces, perform stand-up comedy and magic shows. Some Grade 3 students put on recorder concerts for their families with songs they learned during Term 1 and 2. Miss Hunt had a lot of fun creating videos to demonstrate the activities to the students on Vimeo. Now, we're looking forward to a slow move back to normal school, as Preps, Grade 1 and Grade 2 return to Performing Arts in the classroom, and Grade 3-6 continue with online learning for the next few weeks!

Performance times are matinee at 1pm and evening at 7:30pm. For more Aladdin Jr information please see the 'Production' tab above or website http://tppsproduction.weebly.com/ (currently under construction) Grade 5 and 6 students can find additional information specific to their roles on Google Classroom or Drop Box. Thank you to our Prep, Grade 1 and 3 students for a great first half of the year learning dance, drama, Boomwhackers, Glockenspiel and Recorders. A BIG thank you to Hayley Boucher for doing such a fantastic job teaching Performing Arts whilst I was absent during Term 2. The students had a wonderful time! We have certainly been busy in Performing Arts this term!
We have Prep students working on a dance and creative movement unit, moving to music and focusing on different locomotor and non-locomotor movements. Grade 1 students are commencing a music unit on the glockenspiel and aiming to learn the music notes. Whilst Grade 3 students are learning a drama unit focusing on characterization, body and facial expressions to communicate stories and ideas. This is what we are working on in Performing Arts this term:
Grade 3 – a dance unit with our focus on Boot Scootin’ Line Dancing. Grade 4 – are creating their own puppet shows using a familiar text as a catalyst for their scripts. Grade 5 – a music unit with our focus on African Drumming. Grade 6 – are creating their own dance in small groups that incorporates the dance elements and some choreographic devices. CHOIR Are busy working on learning four songs to perform at our Christmas Concert that is on Wednesday 12th December, 6-8pm. DANCE TROUPE Both Dance Troupes are continuing to perfect their routines, which will also be showcased at the Christmas Concert. Recent rehearsals have been interrupted due to other school events (Talent Quest, Public holidays, Choir), but next week we will be back to regular practices! TALENT QUEST Congratulations to all those students that participated in the auditions for the Talent Quest 2018. The judges certainly had a difficult task due the very courageous and creative performances and talents that were showcased! At assembly, last Wednesday Hayley and Chantelle (Performing Arts captains) announced The Talent Quest Finalists. The judging panel and I are all looking forward to the Finals that are taking place tomorrow at lunchtime (1-1:50pm) in the Hall. Please note that audiences are welcome. Winners from The Talent Quest 2018 Finals will be announced at assembly on Wednesday 28th November. Term 3, in reflection:
I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the students from Grades 3 to 6 in Performing Arts this term. There has been individual work, small group exercises and whole class collaborative projects – it has been a lot of fun! After introductory activities and setting up of Performing Arts expectations, students have worked on the following areas: Grade 3 – playing recorder: focusing on correct breath technique and positioning on the tone holes. Learning the following notes A, B, C and G; and timing of quavers, crotchets, semibreves and rests. Grade 4 – processing drama: using different texts to explore and interpret different characters. Students have had to predict, synthesise and alter the story through small skits, freeze frames and mimes. Grade 5 – dance: focusing on making creative steps from everyday movements. Then using choreographic devices to piece the steps together. Grade 6 – African Drumming: learning how to play a base and tone. Playing Kpanlogo, a rhythm from Ghana, and learning the low, hi, breaks and echauffement parts. Although their favourite activity was playing ‘Uno’ on the drums. Over Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes, there have been two dance troupes. They have worked hard and been very committed to learning their dance. Thank you to all those girls. I shall look forward to working with them next term. Choir will re-commence in Term 4 with our rehearsing all being in preparation for our School Carols Concert in December. If students are interested, please come along on Monday, 8th October to the Performing Arts Room at lunchtime. Posters have been placed around the school announcing the 2018 Talent Quest!! Interested students have been asked to sign-up on the sheets provided in their classrooms by Friday, 26th October. Auditions will take place from Monday, 29th to Wednesday, 31st October in the Performing Arts Room at lunchtimes. A few pointers for auditions: Performing as a soloist, duet or small group is allowed. No costumes. If needed students are to provide their own props or equipment. Music if needed – please write down on the sign-up sheet. No audiences. Information for Finals in Week 6, Monday, 12th November, will follow at a later stage. Students in Grade 3 are commencing learning recorders this week, building on what they learnt in Grade 2. Thus far, they have focused on using rhythm blocks to create music bars in common time; and revisiting the differences between semibreves, minims, crotchets and dotted minims.
Currently I am attending some professional learning workshops with 'School Drama Hub' that consists of presenters from the Sydney Theatre Company, University of Sydney, Deakin University and ACARA. It has been a great experience and I am enjoying testing out what I have learnt with the students in Grade 4. Students are doing process drama activities in response to different texts that encourage deep thinking about the characters, relationships, feelings and themes from the books. Grade 5 students are using every day actions or sports to adapt into creative movements and dance steps. Grade 6 students are experiencing West African drumming with djembes. This is a new unit of music, stemming from professional learning I undertook in June and then the purchase of a class set of djembes. Students seem to be having fun each week learning more techniques and parts of a song. Drumming is also a great tool for mindfulness! Welcome back! I hope everyone had an enjoyable School holidays and from chatting with the students there certainly was some fantastic adventures and experiences had during the break.
The last two weeks has been about setting expectations in Performing Arts and getting to know one another by playing different games -acting skits, improvisation, movement and movie trivia. It has been enjoyable working with the Grade 3 to 6 students again! For Term 3, we will have a break from choir and instead will commence a dance troupe. At this stage it looks like there will be a junior and senior group. Each group will work together to choreograph dances with Mrs Daly’s guidance and then rehearse to share later in the term at assembly. If your child is interested please come along Tuesday 31st July 1pm, so that we can finalise our numbers. Thousands of Victorian students are perfecting their dance moves, memorising their words and tuning their instruments as part of this year’s Victoria’s State Schools Spectacular. Musicians, singers, dancers, skaters, puppeteers and circus artistes will amaze an audience of more than 10,000 people at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena on Saturday 15 September, with shows at 1pm and 6:30pm. This year’s show, titled “With the Beat”, explores ideas of belonging and identity. The journey of exploration will see Hisense Arena transformed into a mystical Venetian masquerade ball and a wondrous Steam Punk Fairground. There is something for everyone’s musical taste. Talented vocalists and musicians will perform more than 40 songs from artists like Macklemore, Imagine Dragons, Shepard, Tim Minchin and Beyoncé. This annual event provides a unique training opportunity for students onstage as well as behind the scenes on audio, lighting and video production, stage management, costume and film, make up and photography. Tickets to the event are on sale now through Ticketek. It is hard to imagine that Friday marks the end of another term and half of 2018 already gone! It has been a great start to the year working with Prep to Grade 2 students. I particularly enjoyed the music activities on Boomwhackers and glockenspiel we did together this semester. I hope they all have enjoyed their time in Performing Arts and that they have just as much fun in Chinese with Mrs Dulics.
Well done to the Grade 1-2 students who have performed at Assembly the last two weeks. It is always a big challenge to stand on stage in front of your peers, family and friends. You all did a terrific job! I look forward to working with the Grade 3 to 6 students in Performing Arts, after the holidays! Have a wonderful and safe break. |
