I certainly have enjoyed the start to Term 3 – it has been great to see all the happy faces and commence working with the students in Grades 3 to 5. There definitely is a buzz building around school with all the work and chatter about the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio.
In Performing Arts the students have viewed different video snippets of the Sydney 2000 and London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies. Our discussions have focused on the country’s stories as told through the different images and dances viewed. We also questioned why the Opening Ceremony showcased these elements of the countries and what was its significance. Students were amazed by the elaborate sets and costumes, not to mention Nikki Webster flying over the stadium on the high wire. Over the next few weeks Grade 5 students will be creating movies in small groups with each grade working on a different country – Australia, Brazil and Greece and an aspect that links to the Olympic Games. Students in Grade 4 have researched Brazil and Rio de Janeiro with each grade getting an assigned topic – Carnival, Football, Brazilian wildlife and nature, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. They will be working on creating a dance on the topic for a pseudo 2016 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. Grade 3 students have brainstormed what Japan would showcase during Rio’s Closing Ceremony to encourage the excitement for the 2020 Olympic Games.
