Last term, Foundation students worked on narrating picture storybooks that linked with their Inquiry unit ‘From Farm to Plate’. Through the narration students’ added actions, sounds through voice, body percussion and musical instruments to communicate their ideas. There were some fantastic roosters in the group!
Term 4 Foundation students are playing ‘Boomwhackers’, a set of tuned percussion instruments that look similar to rainbow-coloured plastic tubes. They are learning to link the tubes to their musical notes and solfege (singing notes – “Do-Re-Mi”). We are looking forward to learning a song to perform at the Foundation Concert – fingers crossed that it all comes together! Grade 5 and 6 students this term are working on creating their own Performing Arts game in a pair or by themselves. They have an assessment rubric to use in the development of the game to ensure they create an enjoyable, educational and functional game for others to play.

Choir re-started this term in a burst of excitement! Due to the level of interest from the students and timetabling constraints, we will have a Junior Choir for Grades 2 and a Senior Choir for Grades 3-6.
I hope that starting next week we will have regular rehearsals, Monday session 4 for the Junior Choir and Monday session 6 for the Senior Choir. Please stay tuned for information about performances at school and possibly in our local community. The annual Victorian State Schools Spectacular provides an invaluable performing arts opportunity for Victoria’s government school students from Prep to Year 12, encouraging development of their creative skills, discipline, perseverance and confidence over months of rehearsals.
As one of the largest recurring productions in Australia, the Victorian State Schools Spectacular brings together over 3000 school students performing as a 64 piece orchestra, 1300 voice choir, 1200 mass dancers, 30 lead vocalists, 16 principal dancers, 20 ensemble dancers, 8 backing vocalists, roller skaters and puppeteers and much more. The Spectacular also provides a unique training opportunity for students behind the scenes on audio, lighting and video production, stage management, costume and film, make up, photography, and publicity. The Spectacular displays and unites government school communities through working towards a common goal of more students reaching the highest level of achievement in the arts, ensuring kids are happy, healthy and resilient, and building pride in our schools.
