It certainly has been a busy time in Performing Arts!
This term, many Grade 4 students have been assisting with our transition programs for our future Prep students in 2019. One of these programs is where I visit our local Preschools/Childcare centres and take our Performing Arts Captains and some Grade 4 students along to facilitate dance, drama and music activity rotations for the 4 year-old groups. Thanks to the following students for their patience, kindness, great leadership skills and showing the TPPS values so well whilst working with the kinder students: · Lachlan, Christian, Ruby, Ashi, Ariana and Mia (Deep Creek Preschool), · Aless, Thesan, Leeroy, Zac, Performing Arts Captains – Chantelle and Hayley (Gumnut Gully Preschool), · Lynette, Rihanna, Jemma, Molly, Toby and Cruz (Imagine ELC), · Jagger, Josh C, Rihanna O, Josh R, Hudson and Polly (Templestowe Preschool) and · Ari, Nicole, Georgia, Nolita, Finn and Maddison (Yarra Valley Preschool). Thank you also to Viana, Marko, Stylian, Riley, Alexis and Emily who all assisted the Performing Arts ‘Taste of School’ session. They were a great help ensuring it all ran smoothly and that our new Preps were entertained.

Prep students have continued to play games, sing and perform songs with the Boomwhackers. They are doing a great job at remembering all the colours (Red, Orange, Yellow, Light Green, Dark Green, Purple and Hot Pink), notes (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) and Solfege names (Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti) that all go together.
The following classes 1A, 1B and 1E have been busy learning the song “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars and playing the chorus on the Glockenspiel. They will perform the song at assembly on Friday 29th June. Please note that this will be at an earlier time slot of 1:40pm, due to it been the final day of Term 2. Grades 1/2T, 2AF and 2M have also been learning the Glockenspiel. They will be performing their version of “Frere Jacques” at assembly on Wednesday 20th June. Well, what has happened in Performing Arts the last two weeks?
Our Prep students have continued with playing Boomwhackers and singing songs. Along with working with the Grade 4 students to prepare them for their upcoming visits to some of our local preschools and kindergartens. Prep S and D were able to experience a complimentary dance lesson with the Australian School of Performing Arts (APSA). They had a fabulous energetic session with Laura! Grade 1 and 2 students have been learning different musical notes on the glockenspiels and singing some songs. We hope to be able to share our work at an assembly later this term. Choir has also recommenced, please see the Choir page for further details. Welcome back to Term 2! Hope everyone had a fabulous Easter and school holidays - it does go quickly doesn't it?!
This term the Prep students are undertaking a Music unit with Boomwhackers, tuned percussion instruments. Grade 1 and 2 students will be working with Glockenspiels for their Music unit. Next week during Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtime, Choir will be commencing for Grade 2-6 students. Please come along to the Performing Arts Room if you are interested and see if it's something you'd like to do. It has been fun and fantastic to dance the term away with the Preps, Grade 1 and 2 students!
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Easter. Enjoy the school holidays and see you in Term 2. Templestowe Park today was ablaze with orange as we celebrated Harmony Day. In Performing Arts the Grade 1/2 students watched two videos discussing what the day means and a music clip “The Orange Ribbon Song”. Students then discussed words associated with the videos and Harmony Day before completing their own acrostic poems.
discussions: - "Equality - it means everyone is equal.” Bella 2M - “Harmony Day is when we appreciate other cultures in Australia.” Alex 2AF - People may celebrate by getting dressed up in Traditional costumes. “We wear saris for weddings and special Indian occasions.” Katara 1/2T Today was a little bit of a different day in Performing Arts as there was a timetable change due to Grade 5/6 Camp. I was fortunate enough to work with Grade 3K and 3F. As this Friday is the 'National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence', we watched a short animated movie from the associated website. Students then created their own skit about bullying. There was some fantastic conversation generated and links made to what has been learnt in Positive Education at TPPS. Great work!
It is hard to believe that we are already into week 6 of Term and with Easter hot on our heels it’s almost a wrap!
The new Preps have settled into the Performing Arts lessons and routines so well. We are currently working on creating a butterfly dance that will teach students locomotor and non-locomotor movements along with some choreographic devices - unison and repetition. Grade 1 and 2 students are collaborating well and are busy in small groups creating a dance that represents a day at the beach. There are a few menacing sharks in the water, we may have to enlist the help of Mick Fanning to help us control the situation. Like the Preps, the Grade 1 and 2 students are working on incorporating locomotor and non-locomotor movements along with some choreographic devices - unison, canon repetition and retrograde. We have had an enjoyable start to the year in Performing Arts! It has been fun teaching and learning with the Grade 1 and 2 students again, getting to know the new Preps and seeing the Grade 3-6 students around the school.
Lessons commenced with setting the work standards and behaviour expectations and playing different Performing Arts games to build class relationships. Prep students are currently working on a dance unit using the book ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle as a starting point. They are exploring locomotor and non-locomotor movements, body shapes they can make that relate to the life cycle of the caterpillar. Grade 1 and 2 students are exploring dance and creative movement focusing on their personal experiences at the beach and using other texts and video clips to add to their thinking. Congratulations to Dean from 2AF on his RRIPO Role Model award for responsibility and teamwork in Performing Arts, to be presented at assembly on Wednesday 28th February. This week at school, the Grade 1-6 auditions were held for the LCA Factor.
